FAQ – Athletic Mouth Guards

Q: Why is a custom mouth guard better than a off-the-shelf one?

A: The guard is made from an impression (mold) of the teeth, resulting in a very good fit that allows good air flow or speech. In addition the mouth guard is made of superior materials that are durable and effective. This is in contrast to the ‘boil and bite’ mouth guards which are somewhat clunky and offer minimal protection.

Q: How does the dentist make a custom impression of the mouth?

A: The dentist uses a special mold filled with a gel like substance that is inserted in the child’s mouth for about 30 seconds.  Once the gel has hardened, the mold is removed and the impression is complete. The mold is then used to make one or more mouth guards that will fit perfectly.

Q: Are there mouth guards for athletes who wear (braces) orthodontic devices?

A: Yes, this is a very important fact that only a dentist can provide a custom made mouth guard that can be worn with your braces.

Q: How long does it take to have a custom mouth guard made?

A: The same day! It is better to come schedule an appointment for the procedure to ensure timely completion.
